Evaluation

The Codes and Conventions of short films (Listed prevously Here) are very varied and are not strict to follow, however they do tend to be a brief guideline and a core similarity throughout most shorts. When researching the conventions I looked into Youtube(Specifically FutureShorts) and also the BBC shorts page. What I found was that most short films will have the title at the beginning of the film, generally on a black screen, signifying the low budget. Also credits will be similar to a full film, but obviously shorter, mise en scene will tend to be more gloomy and music will last throughout the film, or at least a major part of it.
Editing: With a short-film, there will always be an impact of making reality seem abnormal, or what is abnormal feel like reality. This can be done with a varied range of editing techniques to make the viewer feel out of place. For our film we did this be having short cuts (subliminally) of one of our abnormal characters(Blue Man). We got this idea from Sunshine(2007-Danny Boyle) which used this idea to forsee a moment of what was coming ahead. We did this in hoping that it would make what was a normal day for our main protagonist in our plot feel more like a dis-equilibrium, to the audience. We also decided that we would edit our movie to have quick, short cuts to the music. This was influenced by Shaun of the Dead(Starts at 4:19)(2004-Edgar Wright) and also makes it similar to a music video which we found in our research, is what a lot of short films tend to be.
Cinematography: To get the right feel for our film and make it work correctly we need the camera to be in a perfect position to get the exact framing we wanted. A shot that needed this precision was the travel scene. We wanted to have the shot look like the background was changing but Ben(Gordon) was staying centre frame. To complete this we had the grid set up on the camera screen so we could set up where Ben had to be placed. We then had him walk towards camera and we cut them together to make it work. This part was influenced by the Grand Theft Auto 4(2008-Rockstar Games) trailer.

Lighting: With the time of filming being around winter, the day got darker much quickly then we would like it to. This meant that we had difficulty with having continuity near windows in shots if we needed to re-shoot as the light outside will either be darker, or lighter than before, depending on when we were filming. In some shots we also needed the room to be lighter.
For this we would have a friend hold up a desk lamp facing in the direction of the camera, from behind the camera, but with a translucent cloth over it, so some light was given, but not too much. White balance was not a problem in most shots but for the dialogue scene where most walls are white, we turned down the brightness so it did not over power the other colours.

Representations: Our main protagonist in our film was to represent the average boy of today's society. Average build, normal life, middle class, nothing very special to him. However, as audience feedback suggested, he was also set up for the Female Gaze as girls liked the scene of when he's getting out of bed without a top. We represent the British countryside by showing lots of foliage in the local area. This is different to American set areas as they will tend to be more built up areas with trees planted by man, where our areas are woods and forests by roads.

Characters: When picking who we would have for our characters we looked into other productions which we felt were similar to ours and looked into how our characters should be. We realised that for our protagonist who controlled time(Blue Man) he would need to be creepy and out of the ordinary, hence why he became blue. However, we needed the audience to relate to him and therefore dressed him up in a suit. This showing that he is normal in a sense that he maintains a job, and the black tie to show he may not be the most happy person. Half Life's(1999-Valve) G-Man character influenced Blue man and also we took the name of the main protagonist from half life main protagonist as well, as a inter textual reference. Another intertextual reference we used was taking the second name of John Locke from Lost(2005-2010 - JJ Abrams) as our main characters second name. Lost also influenced how we edited our film.
Narrative: The narrative for our film was derived form just talking to each other and mixing our two ideas from before. But we were also influenced by films such as The Matrix Trilogy(1999-2003  - Wachowski Brothers) where a complicated theory is explained by an almighty character of some kind. This is why we believe our film was over complicated and ended up being rather corny as we tried to use big words to make our narrative feel more grown up and clever. We probably didnt pick the best actor to play our Doner/Magic Helper character and when our disequilibrium was solved, there wasn't a big enough punch to it and therefore it flopped on the audience since they were still confused about the dialogue we proposed to them before. We however thought we would leave a narrative enigma at the end of the film by leaving it with our protagonist arriving back in bed and it ends. This is similar to real short films as they will generally like to keep the audience thinking and an open end can usually do it well.
Soundtrack: Our soundtrack was created to reflect the mood of the character and also genre of the film. We chose a Jazz song as it fits well with the tempo of the protagonist getting up, and also it can fool the audience into thinking it is going to be an up-beat film with nothing too creepy or odd about it. This hopefully makes it more shocking when the pace of the film changes. It also works well at making our film more like a music video which a lot of short films are. Sound effects used in our film needed to signify a change in location such as the flashback scene and also that time wasn't right so for this we looked into Lost and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time(2003). Lost used a boom effect for when switching over to flashback which we thought was a good way to switch. We took from Prince if Persia a similar style of noise for when time is be ing effected(here).

Titles: For our titles of our film we thought we would go with the average white on black. This because it signifies that we are an indpendent film with not a very big budget. We changed the title of our film as we decided it needed to stand out more to the audience, therefore we made it look like a digital clock, which is relevant to our film, it also attracts attention as extra sound is played alongside it to make it more believable. For our ending credits we though we would break the norm and do them backwards. This was to relate to our story which was all about time being backwards. This makes the audience feel slightly more confused as it is not what they are accustomed to.
Promotion: A teaser campaign is generally seen in major films as it attracts the audiences attention and starts brewing up conversations between people about what it could be. The best i've seen is Cloverfield(2007 - JJ Abrams) Where a date was released and some raw footage which made major headlines of forums over the internet. We decided to make a teaser poster for our film which was solely based on the Blue Man Character. This is because this is the weirdest bit of our film and thought it would cause more of a stir between our audience. We wouldn't have a cinema campaign however as we are just a short film, and also since we are an independent british film, we would most likely be straight to DVD anyway or at least in selected 'arthouse' cinemas within the UK, and if lucky, in USA.

When creating our package of film poster, Magazine review and the film, we needed to think how we would link all three to the same audience. To do this we tried to have a core similarity to the posters and the magazine review. Both our posters were centred around having the main protagonists in main shot in the centre. These are to clearly show who the film is bout. To link to our younger audience more, we thought we would have the school as a focus in the Main poster as well. This is so a setting that is recognisable to them is shown and they will feel that the move is more relevant to them. Reviews on the poster are also from places that the audience should have heard of/look up to. This means that the viewer sees the review, thinks there idol likes and therefore they should too.

Our magazine review is related to the target audience by speaking in an informal language and hinting at ideas and forms they will recognise such as text speak e.g. OMG. The younger audience will prefer the informal language as you can relate to the writer more, and also younger generations are loosing formality in speech and actions so it will be more normal to them. The magazine is aimed more at a male audience however, with facts girls may not be as impressed in and also the fact we are a bit sexist from time to time e.g. Lady in the kitchen.

When working with our target audience we found many points that needed to be changed and we reflected on the comments that our audience gave us to try make our film better and to more of their taste. First comments on the animatic and initial pitch was that it sounded rather complicated and would be tricky to do with re-wind and other tricks. We acted on this and decided that when we start writing the screenplay we keep dialogue to a minimum. However it turned out that when we tried sticking it to a minimum, we made it more complicated than it originally could have been.
After first filming and creating our beginning we pitched it to the rest of our class mates. They all noticed, along with us, that on big screen you can notice a camera bump when Ben was walking down the stairs. We changed this by making the stair clip shorter. Also it felt a bit out of place without music over the top of the beginning and would fit better with the short cuts, so Sam created a jazz song composing it to the film.
When we put the whole film together, we showed it to the class again. This time they notified us that it was rather complicated to follow the dialogue as they couldn't understand the Blue Man as he was muffled and speaking too fast. Some people also decide that it would also work better as a mute, and speak backwards instead if he needed to. However, we were not able to re-film and revise a new screenplay so we were not able to do this re-shoot so instead we dubbed over the blue man. We had also added music over the ending re-wind and credits which audience said worked very well.
After watching our final cut we picked up on a few flaws ourselves. We noticed that at the beginning with the microwave, you can see the blue man pop up on the left of the camera. This is because our first intentions for this shot was to have you able to see him in the reflection of the glass but it did not work, but sadly I wasnt out of shot either when I popped up. There is a jump cut in the music just as Ben enters the school, it isnt very noticeable but it can pop out if the volume is loud enough which can sound out of place at times. If we were to do it again, I believe that we would include more shots of things happening in rewind and also cut down the dialogue to include more action. This is reflected off feedback given by our teacher. This is because at the moment our films twist is very weak and doesn't create the reaction we intended therefore including all this should make it more creepy.

To produce our package and research into products I used a range of new media technologies. Here is a list if what I have used.

  • Social Networking - I used sites such as facebook/Youtube/scribd to upload documents and videos and then get feedback off a wider target market, the internet and my friends.
  • Blogger - I used blogger to document my findings as I went along and a constant stream of information of how I was doing and what I was doing at each stage.
  • Search Engines - I used sites such as www.imdb.com and www.google.co.uk to get information and find what i needed. IMDB is a good site for film information as it has a database on every film.
  • Final Cut Express 4 and Sony Vegas 8 - I used these two programs to edit our film together, both of which are highly capable and are both similar, but Final Cut is on Mac Only.
  • iDVD 6 - We used this program to put our film onto DVD at the end of the editing process.
  • Garageband - We used garageband to create music for our film. We recorded the music using real instruments.
  • DV Camcorder - This was used to film our production. It is easier to film in digital as we can get it onto the Mac much  faster.
  • Both OS Formats - I ended up using both operating system formats as some programs were easier to sue on PC while others were easier on Mac
  • Scanner - We used the scanner to scan in our storyboard. This was much easier than drawing it on pc.

For some reason whenever i upload the file, pictures move. I have saved it as many formats and uploaded it but it does not work. I will upload this and try to fix it best i can ASAP. I could remove the pictures, but that would destroy the authenticity of a magazine review.

Rough Cut 3

After showing this feedback to our teacher we have decided that we will be:

  • Taking extra shots to set the mood more
  • Improve dialogue
  • Add credits to the end

Sounds

For our sound collection we have come across a sigh called www.freesound.org. This has a library of copyright free sound effects which you can easily log on and collect. You have to sign up to the site however, but it is free. We also will be recording some of our own sounds for the work e.g. alarm sounds.
This is a big step up from last year where we just used default sounds from the iMovie library which everyone else would be using as well.

Working with Children

After filming the scene with Will White, I know understand the point when people say 'Never work with children and Animals'

Rough Cut and Feedback

Feedback: Needs more shots of the blue man to give a more Woah! factor. Like the shots that continue same action from different angles (match on action)
Music would be good if it is slow, maybe rewind.
The shots of blue man need to be made more blue(this has been edited in this cut you see here, but this feedback was given along the way by actor Ben Gibson)

(Feedback was gained by uploading on Youtube  and then posting a post onto facebook for promotion)

Music and Sounds still need to be recorded, and noted that the titles at the beginning need to be edited e.g. 'A Short Film' will not make final cut

Ancillery Text Research

Poster
For our poster we are going to make we have looked at a range of film posters of which we believe are successful and have picked out points from posters we believe influence us most.

Star Wars: Episode 1
All the star wars posters follow the same general rule where the lead character will be in focus on the front and then secondary characters follow suit towards the back. The main evil character will be in large at the back as well. This part is what influences us most where we think it will be a good idea to have our Main protagonist at the front, and our doner/magic helper will be at the back (the blue man)

The Hangover
This poster follows general codes and conventions too. It contains the movie tag line and will also contain some information on the makers, if they are already made by another movie. It also has the main protagonists in centre frame, which instantly shows the audience that these will be the people they will be following in the film. The Block at the bottom is also what we will be taking example from with the layout of out poster.

Magazine
Looking at a few film magazines such as Empire, Film and Sky Movies we decided that if we were going to write our film review then wed have to have a large double page spread, generally filled with pictures. Also the language will be rather informal, as if talking to the reader as a friend.
The layout of our magazine will bi similar to Empire mainly. A large picture will take up about half the article and the rest will have the review. Side bits such as directors quotes and facts will be dotted over the picture.

Beginning Audience Feedback

This is the beginning of our film. Bare in mind we plan on adding more titles at the beginning of it, and music has to be played to it.
.

Good so far, edited well. Sound needs to be cut out at times and music needs to be put in where it needs to be.
More titles need to be on before credits(Going to be done anyway) And should stick with the theme of the title font. Nice idea of going to have a ticking noise with the title which extends onto the scene
Can clealry see influence from Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead openings.

Ancillery Tasks

As part of our coursework, we have to include two ancillary texts.
For our coursework we have chosen to do:
a poster for the film
and
a film magazine review page featuring the film

Our poster for the film will be mostly done on Adobe Photoshop Elements. It will be similar to our teaser poster, but much more fulfilling as it is a normal poster, not teaser.
Our Film magazine will be done in Office Publisher as this is great for using graphics alongside text.

More Details to come, watch this space...

Schedule

Schedule for Filimg
We are going to try stick to this as much as we can but changes mar occur if things go wrong. These will be notified.

Updates (23/11/09): Filming of getting ready scene will now be done afternoon Tuesday. The location has also changed to Ben Gibsons house.

Genre Research

The genre we want to look into is Thriller/Comedy, (comedy but with a bit of a serious side/weirdness to it) will look into books and also previous films of the same genre.
Family Guy - Seth Macfarlane- 2003 to Present
Robot Chicken - Adult Swim - 2007 to Present

After watching these two shows(of similar creators[Seth green is the man behind Robot Chicken but also stars in Family Guy as Chris Griffin, and Seth Macfarlane will also take part in Robot Chicken at times e.g. P.S I love You S4EP1]) we noticed that random actions add good comedy effect e.g. Random man on fire come on screen screaming for a split second.
Having distorted physics also tends to make things more of a comedic value as well e.g. in Family Guy when people fall off something, they will hit the floor instantly, with a loud thud.

Donnie Darko - Richard Kelly - 2001
This film has a few elements we would like to take into our film.
The film is based around the main protagonist (Donnie Darko) seeing an invisible character, but is seen by him and no one else. This invisible character also has a disturbing/weird look to it which can cause unease in a way to the audience.
Camera shots in this film portray the attitude and atmosphere of the main protagonist very well which we feel would work rather well in our film as well.

Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 (VideoGame) - Valve - 1999/2004

This videogame influenced one of our Main Protagonists because a character that features completes a similar position in the story. The character known as 'G Man' looks like a normal person, in a business suit, however is invisible to everyone but the main protagonist. G Man's role is to watch over the main character and protect him, but also watch over him to see if he is worthy. This is the role our 'Blue Man' will have.

Lost - JJ Abrhams - 2006 - present
We have looked into this Tv Show as it uses falshbacks to explain the story and exposition of characters often. Therefore we will take into account these when creating our flashback. For example, we like the sound that is used to translate from flashback and real world.

Deadlines

Here are the deadlines for my blog, they will be updated as i go.

-Friday 16th Have looked at 30 or so Short Films
-Wednesday 20th have blogged casting/prop/music requirements.
-Friday 23rd to have completed Teaser Poster
-Friday 6th November Pod-cast and Genre Research
-Friday 13th (No pun intended) November finish story board, screenplay, casting and Soundtrack preferences

Hardware

The Camera i will be using to record the video footage is called Cannon Wide screen MV920
It is 115mm in length, 92mm in height, 49,mm in width and 375 grams in weight. The LCD screen is 2.7 inches. Te video type is PAL, it also has features to change the white balance;
  • Auto White Balance
  • Manual Brightness/Contrast Settings
  • Multiple features to change lighting and focus such as Daylight, Nighttime, and Sport etc.
It has a built in microphone and its audio output is Stereo. It has a 800x Digital zoom and a 25x optical zoom.

I will be using a tripod for some shots to keep the camera steady. The tripod we used was very useful as it had expandable legs and also you can change the angle of the camera-rest for shots such as a Dutch angle. It is also very stable with adjustable feet as well.
The main good thing about this tripod is that it is adjustable in about anyway which makes it easier to get a steady shot of whatever angle you want.

For some special shots e.g. slow motion we will be using the Lg KC910.

Casting and Costume

All casting, composers and props have been sorted out/are organized to be done by ourselves. Sam White in the group is a composer, and I have props and costumes we are planning to use.
There will be two protagonists in our film. The rest of the cast will be filled up with extras which have been sorted out as friends and other actors have agreed to help out where-ever they can.

One of the protagonists will be the 'Blue Man' he is never named but this is what people have come to call him. He will be acted by me(Sam thomas) and will be dressed in a work uniform (white shirt, black ties, working trousers, black shoes blazer and a hat). He is too look like a busy business man, with not much time on his hands and will be holding a newspaper under his arm.

For our main protagonist in the film we will be using Ben Gibson. He has had acting experience when he was younger and he is also available whenever we are as he has similar frees to us and also is a friend of ours and will happily give up free time to work on the film. He is of a normal stature and is what we see as the average teenage boy. He is 17 years old and is part of the middle class.
The costume for this character will be basic clothing. He will, most of the time, be wearing a leather coat, jeans and a t-shirt.

For  our flash back seen will be using a small child who will be the image of our main protagonist as of when he was younger. This role will be played by Sam Whites Little brother William White. He is aged 7, which is the same age as the character and also will be of similar attitude (Lively, active).

Teaser Poster

This is our teaser poster, We created it on Photoshop using an image taken of me in my outfit for the production and then edited around it. We decided the tag line suited the poster as it is all about time being backwards and also he clock suited this because it is mirrored.

Useful Resources

I useful resource found in my school library was 'Making short Films' Written by Clifford Thurlow.  It teaches how to write scripts, what good shots to sue and also how to create an impact, in a simple to do way. ISBN: 978 1 84520 804 2

www.filmradar.com/community/viewforum/6/  a community site where posters talk about films, this forum in particular talks about short films and people help each other out.

Target Audience

The age range we would be aiming for our target Audience would be 12 (12a technically). This because we will not be using adult language, and if we do, there will be little and it will not be of much harm. the theme of the film isnt too disturbing but it wouldnt be understood as easily to a child audience. There is no sex witnessed in our film, nor violence or drug use, but some scenes may be horrific to some e.g. backwards people and the blue man. Our cast and location will reflect this age as well as it will be in a recognisable environment, and also the age of characters will be older teenagers, which at this age, they aspire to be like.

Our film is aimed at all ethnic minority's. There is no discrimination against either ethnicity however there are only Caucasian characters being used. However this is down to primarily being a mainly Caucasian school. In the media industry this generally doesnt effect the audience of the film anyway as it doesnt really matter. However, if a Black character was to be used as a main protagonist, this could change our audience a little bit as it is seen to attract more of a Black audience, which can be seen as odd as a Caucasian character does not effect as much.

The gender of our film would be aimed at the male audience. This is because we havnt invested in using any female characters, and the main-protagnoists are male as well. However, we will incorporate the Female Gaze in our film by having either a topless man, or a short love scene, but these are not major plot points. With our film also being a Comedy genre, this will cross out the female audience as Comedy has been branded a more male film genre, the Rom-Com being totally different, but this hybrid genre has evolved into being completely on its own.

Our film will be aimed at C1C2(Middle Class) audience. this is because our characters will be of Upper.Middle class but the upper class will be victims of a mockery and from the view of a middle class character. Also the story may be too complex for a DE class or too boring (no explosions and 'hot babes'). However there will be hints of the lower class which can draw them in as the character will be walking around town, through different areas.

Software

In the production of our movie we will use a few pieces of software. The main software we will be using is Final Cut Express 4. We have chosen to edit our film in this programs over others (iMovie used last year etc.) because it is a very complex movie editing program but with a wider arrange of tools to others we can produce much higher quality films. It is also at the film industry standard where films such as District 9. Me and my partner recently under-went a Editing Master-class at the co-op young filmmakers festival where we used another version of Final Cut, but is practically the same.

To compose music for our film we will be using Garageband. This is because it has a wide range of audio sounds which we can use and also it is simple to hook up an instrument and record live to compose our own music. Other software similar to this may be Logic Express 8, this is more complex, but can create better pieces.

To create graphical images we will be using Adobe PhotoShop Elements 6. This is because it is a highly complex program with a wide array of tools which can produce very high quality images. We will be using it mainly for teaser poster but also may create some slides which may feature in the film

Update 10/12/09
We will now be doing all the editing on Sony Vegas Pro. This is because I have used it more at home before, and also since it is at home I can work on it more freely. It is very similar to Final Cut with the precision of the editing and tools available.

Locations

For our locations we decided we would need somewhere gothic to give the movie a more creepy atmosphere. We also needed it to be old fashioned as it would fit in with one of our characters in the film thereforewe came up with this location:
This location will be used when we are having the character walk around his school. We believe that the pattern on the floor sets the scene of his mind rather well as it is a bit weird, but organized.

This image will be for when the character is walking into the school. It will be used with a wide angle shot, being an establishing shot to show and set the scene, also giving off a gothic/weird atmosphere to our movie.

Coursework Options

2. A promotion package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer, together with two of the following three options:
a website homepage for the film; [disregard this option]
a film magazine front cover, featuring the film;
a poster for the film.

10. A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:
a poster for the film;
a radio trailer for the film;
a film magazine review page featuring the film.

Out of these two options available my group has gone for the Short FIlm option. This is because we feel we can put more time and effort into a sequence that roles in order and also put in more deeply thought emotion than a trailer which would be made of a montage of clips and is also much shorter. After looking at examples of both, we believe it will be easier and more fun to do a short film as well. Looking at trailers they generally have big impact shots such as explosions, car chases and other action scenes that would be very hard to mimic at our current level.
